Indian Football Needs Better Specialist Coaching: Pune Pioneers FC Appoint Avijit Ghosh

The appointment of former East Bengal and I-League goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh highlights Pune Pioneers FC’s commitment to strengthening specialist coaching and developing the next generation of Indian footballers.

Indian football’s long-term development depends on more than identifying talented young players. It requires a structured environment in which those players receive quality coaching, regular competitive exposure, appropriate physical preparation and specialist guidance throughout their development.

While much of the discussion surrounding youth football focuses on academies, tournaments and infrastructure, the importance of specialised coaching deserves equal attention.

Pune Pioneers Football Club have taken another step towards strengthening their coaching structure with the appointment of former professional goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh as their new Goalkeeping Coach.

The appointment brings an experienced name from Indian football into the club’s development programme, with Ghosh responsible for overseeing goalkeepers across all age groups in both the residential and non-residential academy structures.

The importance of building specialised coaching departments

Football is a sport in which every position carries different technical, tactical and physical responsibilities. However, goalkeeper development often requires a particularly specialised approach.

A goalkeeper must develop technical proficiency in handling, catching, diving, footwork and distribution. At the same time, the position demands strong communication, concentration, positioning and the ability to make decisions under pressure.

The modern goalkeeper is also expected to contribute to a team’s possession structure and understand how to support the defensive and attacking phases of play.

For young players, these qualities need to be developed progressively. A goalkeeper at an early development stage has different requirements from one preparing for senior competitive football.

This makes the role of a specialist goalkeeper coach particularly important within an academy environment.

By appointing Ghosh to oversee goalkeepers across all age groups, Pune Pioneers FC are looking to establish a more consistent and specialised approach to developing players in this position.

An experienced professional from Indian football

Ghosh brings a playing career that spans several established Indian clubs.

A graduate of Tata Football Academy, where he spent four years between 2003 and 2007, he went on to represent East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.

His association with East Bengal during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons included some significant domestic achievements. He was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He was also part of the squad that finished as Durand Cup runners-up in 2009.

His playing experience included participation in the AFC Cup in 2010 and appearances in the I-League with East Bengal and Air India.

Ghosh later represented Mumbai Tigers in the I-League Second Division and was part of the club’s Durand Cup runners-up campaign. He subsequently played for Sreebhumi Samiti and Aryan FC before joining Royal Wahingdoh.

Royal Wahingdoh finished third in the 2014–15 I-League season, providing another significant chapter in his professional career.

National youth success and a structured football education

Before progressing into senior football, Ghosh achieved success at youth level.

He was part of the Bengal U-16 team that won the National Championship in 2002 and the Bengal U-19 team that secured the Dr B.C. Roy Trophy in 2006.

His development also included international exposure through Tata Football Academy’s tour to England in 2005, where the team won the Wells Cup, and the India U-19 camp and tour to Sri Lanka in 2006.

During his playing career, he had the opportunity to work under prominent coaches such as Subhash Bhowmick, Bimal Ghosh, Santosh Kashyap, Godfrey Pereira and Philippe De Ridder.

These experiences provided exposure to different competitive environments and coaching approaches within Indian football.

From professional football to developing future players

After his playing career, Ghosh transitioned into coaching, specialising in goalkeeper development.

He began his coaching journey with the Hooghly District Sports Association in 2017–18 and subsequently worked with the Kalyani Football League.

His coaching assignments have included Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC, George Telegraph FC and SKM Sports Foundation.

He has worked in different competitive environments, including the Calcutta Football League, Reliance Development League and AIFF U-17 Youth League.

Ghosh holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and brings nearly a decade of specialist goalkeeping coaching experience.

Pune Pioneers FC’s wider development approach

The appointment fits into Pune Pioneers FC’s broader effort to develop a structured football environment.

The club operates a residential football academy in Wagholi alongside a non-residential evening academy programme. Its development structure combines professional football training with education partnerships, competitive match opportunities and additional player-support services.

The club’s intention is to create an environment in which footballers receive support beyond their regular team training.

Within this structure, Ghosh will oversee the goalkeepers across all age groups, providing specialist attention to players at different stages of their development.

His initial sessions have been positively received by players, while fellow coaches have observed encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.

Interestingly, Ghosh and Pune Pioneers FC Club Director Ryan Roy Shah previously crossed paths at Mumbai Tigers during the 2012–13 season, when Ghosh was part of the senior squad and Shah was involved with the youth setup.

Ghosh has relocated from Kolkata to Pune for the opportunity, while his wife and young child remain in Kolkata.

Strengthening the foundations of Indian football

The development of Indian football requires sustained investment in players, coaches and the environments in which young footballers train.

Specialist coaching is an important part of that process. A talented goalkeeper, for example, needs access to someone who understands the specific demands of the position and can provide the technical guidance required to progress.

Pune Pioneers FC’s appointment of Avijit Ghosh is a step towards strengthening that area of its academy structure.

For Ghosh, it is an opportunity to transfer his experience from professional football into the development of younger players. For the club, it represents a commitment to building a coaching department that recognises the importance of every position on the pitch.

Ultimately, the objective is to create better-prepared players who understand the modern game and have the foundations required to progress through the Indian football system.
