The Union Cabinet approved a bill on Friday proposing up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to Rs 10 crore for organised examination paper leaks.
The bill amends the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, raising the minimum prison term for paper-leak convictions from three years to five.
The approval came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the government’s intent to toughen the law.
The move follows the national outrage over the 2024 NEET-UG and UGC-NET paper leaks, which had led to the original Act.
The bill is likely to be taken up for consideration and passing in Parliament on Monday.
